Library Assistant
Job Brief
The Library Assistant assists the Campus Librarian in library operations including but not limited to providing library services, improving the collection, organizing information, marketing the library, and maintaining an orderly study environment.
Typical Duties
Circulation & Reference Services
- Create patron accounts, check library materials in and out, approve renewals, place holds, and submit branch transfer and interlibrary loan requests
- Shelve library materials
- Answer reference questions
- Help library patrons find and retrieve print and digital library materials
Collection Development
- Process incoming library materials
- Shelf read and shelf shift library materials
- Inventory the collection
- Digitize the school archive
Library Operations
- Monitor library usage
- Enforce library policies
- Clean and straighten up the library
- Market the library’s resources and services through signage, displays, and social media
- Plan and execute library programming and special events
- Perform other library tasks and projects as assigned
Knowledge
- Expected: Intermediate knowledge of computers and productivity applications such as Windows, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Canva.
- Preferred: Intermediate knowledge of (academic) library operations, and classification systems (Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal).
Education and Experience
- At least 1-2 years of college preferred
- Experience working in higher education and/or libraries preferred
Abilities and Skills
- A self-starter who is motivated and independent
- Efficient in following written and verbal instructions, policies, and procedures
- Shows careful attention to detail
- Strong customer service, written, and verbal communication skills
- Focuses to perform repetitive, somewhat tedious tasks, often involving hand and wrist movements
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, and lift up to 30 lbs.
- Comfortable handling cleaning supplies and removing dust, dirt, and trash

Time Required
This position is 32 hours per week for 33 weeks between August and May. Work begins Monday, August 21. Work hours when classes are in session will be Mondays-Thursdays 11 AM – 8 PM with some Saturdays 1 PM – 5 PM. One meal per shift is provided free of charge through the campus cafeteria. Work hours when classes are not in session (such as before/after semester and during breaks) will be agreed upon by the librarian and assistant at that period in time.
Compensation
$15-$16 per hour based on experience and/or technical knowledge for the position.
