| Dr. Joseph J. Saggio serves as the Vice-President for Academic Affairs at American Indian College (since October 2011) where he also served previously from 1994-2008. Prior to his return to AIC, Dr. Saggio served at Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington from 2008-2010 as Associate Dean for Graduate Studies.
During his first tenure at AIC he served from 1994-2006 as Academic Dean and then from 2006- 2008 Dr. Saggio held appointment as the Dean of Institutional Assessment and Chair of General Education. During his time at AIC he also taught as a faculty member in Christian Ministry and Education. Dr. Saggio also served as the founding Phoenix Branch Campus Director for the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary based in Springfield, Missouri and as an adjunct professor from 2005- 2008. He also continues to serve as an adjunct professor for Northwest University in their M.A. in Missional Leadership program.
Dr. Saggio received his B.A. in Speech Communication cum laude from California State University, Fresno; his M.A. in Religion from Azusa Pacific University; a second M.A. in Religion from Vanguard University of Southern California. He received his Ed.D. in Higher and Adult Education from Arizona State University in 2000, and completed the Management Development Program (post-doctoral studies) at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, Massachusetts in Summer 2003.
As a U.S. Missions historian and missionary educator, Dr. Saggio’s specific research interest center around issues related to cultural and ethnic diversity as well as Native Americans in both American higher education and missions. He is especially interested in the interrelationship between postmodernity, contemporary culture, spirituality, and the church. Dr. Saggio has contributed to a number of publications in Higher Education, Theology, and Business including: The Review of Higher Education, Christian Higher Education: A Journal of Applied Research and Practice, Encounter: A Journal for Pentecostal Ministry, Pneuma: The Journal of the Society for Pentecostal Studies, and DiversityBusiness.com He is the senior editor of American Indian College: A Witness to the Tribes, (Gospel Publishing House, 2008) that chronicles the first fifty years of American Indian College. He is also a review editor for the online International Journal of Multi-Cultural Education. Dr. Saggio is listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Education, Strathmore’s Who’s Who, as well as America’s Registry of Outstanding Professionals. He has spoken at over 350 churches around the world and at educational and theological conferences and lectures at colleges and universities on issues related to Native Americans in higher education and missions, as well as policy issues that impact ethnic minority students.
Concurrent with his role at American Indian College, Dr. Saggio continues to serve as an ordained minister and nationally appointed US Missionary to Native Americans with the General Council of the Assemblies of God. He and his wife Nancy, a licensed professional counselor and anxiety coach, have two grown daughters: Rachelle Owens (married to Brandon Owens) and Leah Nicole Saggio. They also have a granddaughter, Kyree Leona Owens who is two years old.
